About Litecoin
One of the oldest cryptocurrencies — the "silver to Bitcoin's gold."
Litecoin (LTC) was created in 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, as a lighter alternative to Bitcoin. It shares Bitcoin's core design but uses a different hashing algorithm (Scrypt), generates blocks four times faster (2.5 minutes), and has a higher maximum supply of 84 million coins. Litecoin was one of the first major forks of Bitcoin's open-source code.
Litecoin is used as a faster, lower-fee alternative to Bitcoin for payments. Several major exchanges and payment processors support LTC. Its faster block time makes small purchases more practical than Bitcoin. Litecoin has also been used as a testing ground for Bitcoin improvements — the Lightning Network was piloted on Litecoin before Bitcoin.
