Hedera (HBAR) is a public distributed ledger that uses a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure called hashgraph rather than a traditional blockchain. Launched in 2019 by Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon, Hedera is governed by a council of major global corporations including Google, IBM, Boeing, and LG. Hedera claims high throughput (10,000+ TPS) and finality in under 5 seconds at very low, stable fees.
Hedera is used by enterprises for tokenized assets, NFTs, supply-chain tracking, and carbon credit markets. Major pilots include Coupon Bureau coupon management and several CBDC experiments. HBAR is used to pay transaction fees and stake for network security. Its governance model — council-controlled rather than permissionless — suits enterprise compliance requirements.
