About Dogecoin

The original meme coin, started as a joke in 2013 and now a top-ten cryptocurrency.

Dogecoin was created in 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a satirical take on the cryptocurrency boom. Based on the popular Shiba Inu "doge" meme, it was never intended as a serious project. Despite that, Dogecoin developed an active community, became a popular tipping currency on social media, and gained massive attention starting in 2021 driven in part by endorsements from Elon Musk.

Dogecoin is used primarily for online tipping, charitable causes (the community has funded numerous high-profile campaigns), and as a speculative trading asset. It has very low transaction fees compared to Bitcoin and faster block times. Tesla and a small number of other merchants accept DOGE for select products.
