About Cardano

A research-driven proof-of-stake blockchain designed for academic rigor.

Cardano is a layer-1 blockchain launched in 2017 by Charles Hoskinson, one of Ethereum's original co-founders. Cardano takes a peer-reviewed, academic approach to protocol development — each major upgrade goes through formal verification and published research papers before deployment. The native cryptocurrency is ADA, named after mathematician Ada Lovelace. Smart contracts launched on Cardano in 2021 through the Alonzo upgrade.

Cardano hosts a smaller but growing DeFi ecosystem, identity solutions, and supply-chain pilots — particularly in developing markets where Cardano has government partnerships (Ethiopia, Tanzania). ADA can be staked directly from popular wallets without a lockup period, making staking accessible to retail holders.
