About Ethereum
The largest smart-contract platform and the foundation of most decentralized finance.
Ethereum is a decentralized computing platform launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders. Unlike Bitcoin, which mainly stores and transfers value, Ethereum lets developers run programs ("smart contracts") on its blockchain. Ether (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency used to pay for computation on the network. Ethereum transitioned from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake in September 2022, reducing its energy use by over 99%.
Ethereum powers most of the decentralized finance ecosystem, NFTs, and a growing share of stablecoin transactions. It hosts thousands of independent applications including Uniswap, Aave, Lido, and OpenSea. ETH is used both to pay transaction fees and as collateral within DeFi protocols. Spot Ethereum ETFs launched in Canada in 2021 and in the US in mid-2024.
